MUSTAFA HULUSI

Archival inkjet and silkscreen print with blocked gold foil on Somerset Satin Enhanced

330gsm29·7 × 42 cm

Edition #10 of 25

Born into a Turkish-Cypriot family and raised in the UK, Hulusi’s art weaves a re-enchanted space that questions the dominant socio-political hegemonies of contemporary life and the power balance between the East and West. His work, which represented Cyprus at the 2007 Venice Biennale, juxtaposes the decorative with the figurative. Often referencing Islamic patterns and op art with the flora and fauna of his native island.

For the Portfolio Hulusi has produced a striking diptych of a wild tulip from Cyprus alongside geometrical optical vanishing perspective in gold foil reminiscent of Turkish ornamentation as well as the visual illusion of Op Art. The bedazzling attraction of the graphic challenges and debates with the humble yet equally potent flower.
